Still Bill

July 1, 2011

The wife and I recently enjoy a delightful and informative documentary called Still Bill.  It was on the life of Bill Withers, the once well-known but now obscure singer and songwriter from the seventies and eighties.  I grew up listening to Bill Withers and deeply enjoyed his simple and yet unforgettable music.  While others were seeking popularity and thus producing music they thought people would like, Bill was seeking to produce music he liked, hoping and anticipating we would also.  He was right.  From Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone to Just the Two of Us, no one doubted Bill’s gifts and talents.  However, what we didn’t know is that he longed for simplicity in his life and just being Bill.  To this end, he pulled way from the music industry unexpectedly and left a void and many questions.  This documentary helps to fill in the gaps and should even challenge us to reevaulate and discern what really matters in life.

After all these years Biill Withers is still Bill – gifted and passionate as ever.  If you’re looking for some good, thought-provoking, and entertaining television, this documentary will do the trick.  I warn you, however.  Once you hear Bill singing again you won’t be able to get those songs out of your head.  But don’t worry, there are worse things that can happen.
