What is the Kingdom?

July 2, 2011

As we continue in our series of sermons in the Gospel of Mark, the theme continues to be the Kingdom of God.  When Jesus inaugurated his public ministry he declared, “The kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe the gospel” (Mk. 1:15).  But what is the Kingdom of God?

The kingdom of God is the eternal reign and rule of God over all things (Ps. 103:19).  It is where the presence of God is known and the power of God demonstrated.  It is entered into (Jn. 3:16); it is sought (Mt. 6:33); and pressed upon us (Mt. 12:28).  It is both coming (Mt. 6:10) and it is here (Mk. 1:15).  It is both established in the heavens (Ps. 115:3) and it is being established on the earth (Rev. 1:6).  It is being realized in the hearts of men and women (Lk. 17:21) .  It is where Christ rules and reigns in righteous, bringing peace, and rejoicing (Rm. 14:17).  It is that and those who are established forever in Christ over and against that which in the end will be destroyed.  The kingdom of God is that which is and the only rule that will forever be (Dan. 4:34-35).
