A Man Named Pearl

July 21, 2011

“Inspiring” is a world that is thrown around too frequently. Most of what people think is inspiring is nothing more than impressive.  We see gifted people in sports and entertainment and we afford to them the term “inspiring” when what we really mean is that their talents and gifts are impressive and unique.

Inspiring means to quicken, to arouse within another the sense of possibility beyond what was previously thought possible.  It is to move beyond impressive and to see that something or someone has accomplished what normally their station or perceived understanding could or should.  It moves us out of ourselves and causes us to begin contemplating greater realities.

Biblically speaking, it is God, the Holy Spirit, moving upon men to communicate his word clearly and faithfully without error. Humanly speaking, it is seeing a human being realizing heights of insight and understanding that no one knew was there, nor can explain.

Subsequently, few things, humanly speaking, truly inspire me.  This is because it is so rare. Nevertheless, I must say that the only word I can come up with to describe A Man Named Pearl is “Inspiring.”  A sharecroppers son, and a factory worker all his life, Pearl Fryar, with hands, heart, and head is a true inspiration.  If you have not seen it, I highly commend it to you.  It might even inspire you to do what you know you should have done weeks ago :).
