Gospel of Mark Resources

August 1, 2011

This week begins our vacation.  Subsequently, our series on the Gospel of Mark will be briefly interrupted.  As I thought of this needful and hopefully refreshing break, I thought it might be helpful to share with you the most valuable resources we have been pleased to employ as we have studied the Gospel of Mark.  While these are not an exhaustive list of the commentaries consulted so far, these are the ones that have proved most beneficial for their particular emphases.

The Gospel According to Mark (The Pillar New Testament Commentary Series) by James R. Edwards

The Message of Mark (The Bible Speaks Today) by Donald English

Let’s Study Mark by Sinclair Ferguson

Mark for Everyone by N.T. Wright

The Gospel of Mark (New International Commentary on the New Testament) William L. Lane

Additionally, each sermon presents its own unique set of questions and challenges that usually require additional references specific to the passage.  Nevertheless, the books listed above are those we return to week after week.  If you are interested in digging deeper into the Gospel of Mark as we preach through it (hopefully you are), these would be good places to start.

Please be aware that the commentaries in your list, while generally commendable in many ways (especially Edwards), contain false statements and misrepresentations of the evidence pertaining to the ending of the Gospel of Mark. You are welcome to contact me for further information about this.

    Yours in Christ,

    James Snapp, Jr.
    Minister, Curtisville Christian Church
